Over the last few months, our Year 9 students have had some fantastic new learning experiences in and out of school.

Senior School Exams

Towards the end of Term 2, the students had their first Senior School examinations and I was particularly proud of the way they prepared for these. First time examinations can be a daunting experience, with all the content students need to learn and the examination rules they must abide by. There is generally a steep learning curve with this first encounter of examinations. Pleasingly, many of the students took on board advice from their teachers and entered the examinations with a mature approach and the correct materials in hand. This new experience has provided them with an opportunity to consider the organisation of their study notes, and usually in Semester Two, students are more organised.

The examination period allows the students to learn to manage their study time at school and at home. Many girls created study timetables to ensure they used their time effectively. The examinations have allowed our girls to reflect on their study habits and determine the study techniques that best suit them. Overall, many lessons were learned, and they can confidently take that knowledge with them into future examinations.

Heyington to Highlands

The Year 9 students had an amazing learning experience by engaging globally through the Heyington to Highlands program. During their time in the Fijian highlands, the girls immersed themselves wholeheartedly in the Fijian culture, where they interacted beautifully with the Fijian children and adult villagers. The girls witnessed and discussed the importance of the United Nations sustainable goals, in particular gender equality. In each village the students were involved in a ‘woman’s talk’ that highlighted the role of women in the Fijian villages and communities and some of the challenges they face. This is always an interesting talk and a highlight of the trip for many. The visit to the Fijian schools showed our students how different education could be globally and this emphasised the importance of a quality education.

It is always fantastic to hear the excitement in the Winter Garden on the Monday morning after the trip. So many of the girls want to share their stories and memories with each other. They are also keen to continue some of the lovely values they learned in Fiji. After numerous discussions with the girls, I know this has been an absolutely amazing experience and a highlight of the year for them.
