Angela Yu Named Yale Young Global Scholar

Angela Yu, 2022 Co-Captain

It is with great pleasure and excitement we announce that St Catherine’s 2022 School Co-Captain, Angela Yu has been accepted into the Yale Young Global Scholars Program.

This is a highly respected program, taking place later in the year, where Angela will complete the short course, in addition to completing her VCE studies.

Angela, who is passionate about Latin, Literature, Philosophy and Culture will participate in a series of sessions in the Literature, Philosophy and Culture program, which really reflects her many and varied interests.

Upon reflecting on her past experiences, what becomes most evident is Angela’s courage to persevere in times of academic challenge. As part of the selection process, it was most moving to read her reflection to Yale on what she would change if she could go back in time:

If I could go back in time, there would be nothing I could and would change because that was who I was at the time. I was easily frightened by unfamiliar things and tearing up was my instinctive reaction. Over time, I’ve grown from that experience. I think about that moment often, and I feel proud to realise how far I’ve come. From being thrown off by the frightening flow of English to falling in love with reading the English classics and going on to learn French and Latin; from being withdrawn into myself, to helping others get out of their shells. For me, this single moment reminds me of how I can always improve myself, and yet also how friendships and support from others is so important. Without my friends and teachers then, I don’t know how lost I would be today.

We acknowledge Angela, her humility, her resilience and her continuing pursuit of academic excellence, and wish her every success with her studies at Yale University.
