Collaboration through Learning Meetings

Social interaction is fundamental to the cognitive development of young children. As they begin to shape their own identity, it is essential to offer the children opportunities to engage with peers in a collaborative environment.
At the Early Learning Centre, one key aspect of the children’s daily routine that encourages teamwork is the “Learning Meeting.” This shared group time brings children and educators together, fostering a sense of community and cooperation. Through regular participation, children gradually learn the value of working collectively as a team.
This interactive forum, rich in social engagement and language, allows children to practice both speaking and listening skills while emphasizing the mutual exchange of ideas. The children are encouraged to express their thoughts, ask questions, propose theories, and engage in meaningful discussions. These conversations often tie into the children’s ongoing projects and inquiries, laying the groundwork for future learning and planning.
By having a voice in their learning process, children develop a sense of belonging and agency. During the Learning Meeting, they also discuss roles and responsibilities for the day and address social challenges, strengthening their problem-solving abilities. Educators document these discussions, enabling children to revisit past conversations, plans, and agreements.
The Learning Meeting exemplifies one of the many collaborative learning opportunities that the children actively participate in each day at the Early Learning Centre.
