From our Head of Performing Arts

We have had an eventful and exciting start to Term 4 in the Performing Arts Department!

Firstly, congratulations to all involved in the Middle Years Musical, The Addams Family: School Edition, who played to four very enthusiastic, sold-out audiences. The energy and passion were palpable as the cast captivated all in attendance with their fantastic characterisation, excellent dance numbers and engaging songs.

Everyone on stage was commendably supported by students in the sizable backstage crew, on the sound and lighting desks, and in the role of makeup artists and designers. Congratulations to Ms Kathryn Lucas, Mr Nick Grunden, Ms Janine Meadley, Mr Rubin Matters, Mrs Lisa Gionfriddo, and Miss Kirrilly Wootton for their wonderful efforts in staging such an entertaining and uplifting production.

The VCE Drama class had their externally assessed VCE Solo Examinations on the first day of Term 4. This was the culmination of weeks of preparation, research, scripting, and rehearsal. The class did themselves proud with their performances of their selected solo structures, and now turn their sights to the written exam.

The Year 9 Theatre Studies class also held their performances of scene selections from DNA and Little Women. The 18 class members collaborated to creatively interpret and present these contrasting scenes to a supportive audience of friends and family members.

The 2024 Senior Musical, Song Contest: the Almost Eurovision Experience, is currently in the throes of auditions. The production will be a high-octane, colourful and loving homage to the Eurovision Song Contest, and will hit The Jamie and Rebecca Gray Theatre in early May 2024.

We are also looking forward to seeing the Showcase of Speech and Drama students, on Tuesday 14 November. Students from Years 5 to 10 are preparing for their examinations, conducted by a specialist examiner from London. They will be performing selections from their Trinity College London Exam pieces in this showcase. For students interested in enrolling in Speech and Drama lessons in 2024, more information can be found here: Speech and Drama Lessons (stcatherines.net.au)

The final Performing Arts event of the year is the prestigious House Arts performances. These will be held in the Senior School Hall on Wednesday 6 December at 6.00pm. This is a free, non-ticketed event and there is already plenty of anticipation about which House will be awarded the Michael Bond Trophy for 2023!
