From the Barbreck Environment Committee

Our Barbreck Environment Committee started the term with a fresh food harvest as the girls enjoyed preparing and eating the vegetables they had planted in Term One.

We came together as a team and put together a little feast including School-grown beetroot, which had been turned into beetroot chips, peppery School-grown radish, which was a favourite for some, along with a salad made from School-grown lettuce.

The girls were delighted with the concept that what they were eating came from seeds or seedlings they themselves had planted. The taste is so much better than in the supermarket.

Keeping in line with growing plants, this week the girls have learned how to separate indoor plants into smaller plants and strike new plants from small cuttings. Soon the girls will take these plants and place them around the School, one for each classroom. As the girls said, “We love nature. It is nice to look around and see it inside.”

Gardening helps teach patience, as some of the cuttings will not be able to be planted for several months, and our once big indoor plants are now back to being small little plants. Gardening also provides an opportunity to engage in mindfulness, as the girls focus on the task at hand and are happy being in the moment.

The Environment Committee meets every Thursday at lunchtime in the STEM Room. Girls from Years 4 to 6 are welcome to attend. We may open to Year 3 in Semester 2.

Also, if anyone has any spare indoor pot plants they no longer need, we are happy to take them.

Thanks for reading.
