Barbreck News – Week 9 Term 4

Archive Her Story – Family Evening

The Year 6 girls were excited to present their Archive Her Story memoir, showcasing their journey through primary school, to their parents during Monday’s evening event.

The evening was the first of a new tradition within Barbreck, which sees every Year 6 student create their Junior School memoir and present it to our St Catherine’s Archivist, to retain for posterity.

We often hear how each girl takes a little of St Catherine’s with her when she departs our School. Our new tradition recognises the indelible imprint each of our Year 6 girls leaves with St Catherine’s. Our Archive Her Story project asks each Year 6 girl to tell her story, through her own eyes.

Over the years to come, every Barbreck graduate will create her memoir, leaving a biographical and pictorial record of her years in Barbreck. Future generations of St Catherine’s girls will gain access to these stories, learning what was important to the girls of the day, and to view the many photographs included, which hold so much historical relevance. Perhaps in years to come, a daughter or granddaughter might find their mother or grandmother’s stories, or perhaps a returning Old Girl can retell her story to current students, bringing so many wonderful memories to life.

A Wonderful Gift, Made with Love

The girls of Barbreck have received a gorgeous gift, a hand made Blue Ribbon Girl, doll. This amazing doll was hand made by Mrs Fiona Musson, a current and past parent of St Catherine’s. The doll has been painstakingly created as a replica of the girl’s uniform. All clothes can be removed and the doll comes with a St Catherine’s backpack, St Catherine’s notebook and scarf. It also comes with two key words, courage and kindness, which are such appropriate words to live by for our girls today.

The message that comes from Fiona reads: “I am from ‘Farm on the Hill’ in western Victoria, and as a St Catherine’s girl, I always try to show kindness to others and be courageous in all I do. Please take care of me. XX’

The one thing this beautiful doll does not have is a name. The doll will be displayed at Barbreck Reception and there will be a jar with entry slips there. We ask girls to think of a suitable name for this Blue Ribbon Girl. The winner will be announced during the final Assembly on Friday 10 December and Fiona Musson, will be present to announce the doll’s new name.

2022 CAPTAINS

The Year 5 girls have been learning about election processes first hand this week with the election of the 2022 School Captains. Commendations go to all girls who nominated for these positions, as they were all worthy nominees. With only a limited number of positions, the positions were hotly contested. Congratulations go to the following students.

During our final Barbreck Assembly on Friday 10 December, we will acknowledge and thank our 2021 Captains for their exceptional leadership over this past, often challenging, year. As is the tradition within Barbreck, our outgoing Captains will pass on the responsibilities of student leadership to the incoming 2022 Captains, through the handing over of their Barbreck sash, placing it around the incoming 2022 Captains. This is a wonderful ritual, and all Years 5 and 6 parents are invited to attend.

The formal presentation of Leadership Certificates and badges will take place during the Leadership Assembly in early 2022.

The end of Term 4 is always a busy and exciting time in Barbreck. I encourage all our families to attend the Junior School Community Christmas Picnic on Thursday 9 December. The Picnic will provide a wonderful opportunity for us to join together and celebrate the end of the school year, and unite in the merriment of the upcoming Christmas season.
