Barbreck Update – Welcome Return to School

STEM Update

Year 6 students have commenced STEM classes with Senior School Science teacher, Mrs Anita Fernando. The girls will have a weekly double lesson in one of our recently refurbished Senior School Science labs. This term the girls are completing the Chemical Sciences unit ‘Change Detectives’.

The unit allows students to become detectives and identify and explain physical and chemical changes in everyday materials. “Change Detectives” provides the students with opportunities to explore melting, dissolving, reacting and burning.

After two weeks of lockdown, we have some exciting times ahead in the Junior School STEM room. Students will be completing activities and experiments whilst learning about the following units.

Prep                   Physical Sciences: On the Move

Year 1                 Biological Sciences: Schoolyard Safari

Year 2                 Earth & Space Sciences: Water Works

Year 3                 Earth & Space Sciences: Night and Day

Year 4                 Biological Sciences: Plants in Action

Year 5                 Chemical Sciences: What’s the Matter

Barbreck Assembly

I would like to recognise the efforts of Barbreck Year 6 students throughout the first half of the year. They are setting a fantastic example for our younger students by consistently displaying and living St Catherine’s School values of Integrity, Curiosity, Perseverance, Gratitude and Empathy.

Each week our School leaders plan and create high-quality, engaging assemblies. I would like to recognise and thank our Barbreck Captains, Chloe Nash and Claudia Driver, for their commitment in assisting to create engaging, fun filled assemblies for students. Their efforts are greatly appreciated by the entire Barbreck community!

Last week, they organised a spirit lifting online assembly that, I am sure, was enjoyed by all. Our student leaders’ abilities to create a sense of belonging and optimism, despite being online and within a tight time frame, was a great achievement.

As always, at our Barbreck assemblies, we will continue to celebrate the musical, sporting, artistic and academic achievements of all our students, as well as reinforcing the importance of kindness and being positive, particularly in challenging times.

Finally, I would like to thank all our Barbreck students, parents, carers and staff for their ongoing commitment to our Learn@Home program and remaining positive and respectful through the challenges of remote learning and COVID restrictions.

It has been wonderful to see the girls return to school over the past three days.
