Music – Concerto Concert

On Tuesday night we were treated to a great variety of wonderful performances from some of our most experienced musicians. It is a testament to the resilience and integrity of our young artists that they have continued to hone their craft through the difficult times last year.

Emma Gregory Year 10 (Flute) began the program with a scintillating performance of Vivaldi’s G major concerto, powering her way through some demanding passages, accompanied by our magnificent Jorgensen Orchestra.

Anita Yang Year 12 (Cello) (Instrumental captain) treated us to Beethoven’s variations on a Mozart aria where two characters are in love with love. Sophie Williams Year 12 (VCE Voice) evoked suitable solemnity with her angelic voice and celebrated Vivaldi’s wonderful interplay of melodies between soloist, Miss Stephanie Stamopoulos (Cello) and Jasper Ly (Oboe) and Mrs Kate Denmead (Harpsichord) with Domine Deus.

Ava Colosimo Year 10 (Flute) got the chance to lead our Staff String quartet with one of my favourite pieces by Bach. Rondo and Badinerie. Chloe (Coco) Butterfield Year 9 (Violin) also lead our Staff Quartet with a mature and engaging performance from memory, of Vivaldi’s Summer. Christina Wu Year 10 (Violin) also played from memory, evoking the imposing landscape and beautiful folk melodies of Norway with her collaboration with Mrs Denmead and Greig’s Violin Sonata G major.

The sound of the Harp, played by Danielle Wong, is quite arresting and is something that we rarely get to hear up close. Her version of Handel’s Bb Major Concerto, with Miss Jessica Farrell (Flute) and Ms Sandy Yao (flute) was heavenly. Catherine Chen Year 11 (VCE Piano) bought the full weight of her experience and expertise to her incredible performance of Rachmaninoff’ s famous Elegie.

Olivia (Rosie) Bogdan Year 11 (Violin) is a seasoned Concerto Concert performer, this being her 4th concerto concert! Her performance of Beethoven’s Romance in F major, accompanied by our amazing Jorgensen Orchestra, showed great empathy and musical skill for this sophisticated piece.

I acknowledge, once again the dutiful work of the Jorgensen Orchestra (Directed by Mrs Lisa Cook) who so graciously prepared the accompaniments for our soloists. A special thank you to Mrs Denmead who accompanies and mentors our young performers with such skill and experience.
