A highlight of our year as Visual Arts educators is the hanging of the annual VCE Art Show. It is that sweet moment when students and staff can stand back and feel that moment of jubilant success. The students receive so much positive feedback from the community that the hard grind, sweat and anxieties of creating artwork and publicly exhibiting artwork fades in one weekend of celebration.

It is a ‘we have made it’ moment. The Year 12 of 2020 have missed out on many of their ‘we have made it’ moments and unfortunately, we are not able to host the VCE Art Show this year. Nonetheless, we are planning on hanging an exhibition at the beginning of 2021 to honour the amazing achievements of the 2020 VCE cohort. In the meantime, the VCE work will be celebrated across Term 4 Weeks 3 –  5 via the newly formed Visual Arts Instagram page (you can find us on Instagram as @stc_inthestudio) In the Studio has been building followers thanks to the St Catherine’s School marketing team and the Creative Arts Auxiliary who have been canvasing the community.

Posting student artworks have had some unforeseen positives. Students have been keen to showcase their work, one student said she was honoured. It is a wonderful reminder that artworks cannot ‘speak’ to anyone from under the bed and that the Arts communicate to us and connect us. In view of posting artworks In the Studio, staff are sharing work from their classes with emails of delight. The common practice of sharing the achievements of the Visual Arts while making a cup of tea in Wiltondale has adapted to remote teaching and learning but is occurring and brings us as educators much joy.

To the VCE Visual Arts students of 2020, we look forward to sharing your spectacular achievements; online In the Studio, on the walls in the future and in the Visual Arts website under construction. We wish the Visual Arts Units 3 and 4 classes all the best in their bright futures.
