Music Update – A flourishing Music program

Music is the great uniter. An incredible force. Something that people who differ on everything and anything else can have in common.” Sarah Dessen

Despite COVID-19, the Music program has flourished this term with students developing their skills through Fun With Notes and Jazz and Voice Gym sessions through to the commitment of our Senior Strings and Year 7 and 8 Band members.

The Recital Series has seen musicians of St Catherine’s unite regardless of genre, age or stage. From popular music through to the romantic tones of Beethoven. From students as young as Year 4 in the Junior School Recital, to our powder blue jumper wearing Year 12s, we have come together to celebrate the musical talents of all.

To all of the performers from the Barbreck Recital, Senior Recitals and Year 9 Recital, you are to be applauded. Your courage to share your music, your talent to perform the way you have and your support of each other throughout the recitals has been tremendous. It would be remiss not to mention the leadership of Senior School Music Captains, Julia Thompson and Indiana Wilde and Barbreck Music Captain, Isabelle Cao in running these recitals. The sincerity of their appreciation and support for all of the performers speaks volumes of their character and leadership.

As Term 4 approaches our VCE Music Performance students are now excitedly working towards a masterclass with Amir Farid, staff pianist at the Juilliard School in New York and pianist with the New York Philharmonic. Catherine Chen is one such musician. Please enjoy her performance of the first movement of Mozart’s Sonata in D Major K 311.

The musicians who have contributed to the Creative Corner and Barbreck’s Latest Hits are also to be congratulated. These students have showcased their talents to the wider St Catherine’s audience, and they have been captured in videos featured on the Creative Corner which can be found on the Co-curricular Music Portal page.

Though we are not sure what curve balls COVID-19 will continue to bring, St Catherine’s musicians have and will continue to prove that you can’t stop the music.
