Chess – Victoria Online Interschool Chess Event

On Tuesday 25 August, a team of five St Catherine’s students participated in an online Chess Victoria Secondary Open Interschool Tournament, which involved a total of 125 students from 17 schools. The standard of play in the tournament was very high, as a number of Victoria’s elite junior chess players were among the participants.

The day was a success for the St Catherine’s Team which scored 18 points in the tournament and finished a commendable 7th out of the 17 participating schools. Thanks to this pleasing performance, St Catherine’s has qualified to participate in two Chess Victoria state finals events, which will take place in October.

Congratulations to Paula Chen (Year 10), Maeli Davenport (Year 8), Lillian Lu (Year 8), Rhea Werner (Year 8) and Jisu Yang (Year 8) who represented St Catherine’s in this event. A special congratulations is due to Paula Chen and Lillian Lu for their outstanding individual performances. Paula recorded six wins and a draw from her seven games and was the equal 2nd highest scoring player in the tournament, which was an amazing effort given that there were 125 participants. Lillian also performed very well, finishing as the equal 8th highest scoring player in the event, with a tally of five wins and a draw from her seven games.
