Junior School – Year 6 – Migration

Throughout Term 1, during Humanities and Social Science lessons (HASS), Year 6 students have been learning about migration. They have studied the history of Australian migration and the forces that motivate people to leave their country of birth. The unit has been of great interest to the students with some of their comments following:
We have been studying the history and laws around immigration and researching Australian immigration schemes from 1901 to present. We are currently creating digital timelines of immigration history for this period. I am really enjoying this unit of inquiry and trust my friends are too. Harper Roberts, Year 6R
There are both ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors that influence migration. People are forced to move from their countries of birth because of war, poverty, government corruption, starvation or a lack of healthcare. Migrants are drawn to countries such as Australia because it is safe, has a strong economy, a stable government, plenty of food, good healthcare and good education. Alexandra Mirabella, Year 6R
