Connecting With The Community

Our early learning programs provide the children with opportunities to connect with the broader community and learn about the world around them.

Recently, we have been discussing with the children the needs of other children who are less fortunate. The children were given the opportunity to gather some of their old winter clothing that no longer fits them to donate to the St Kilda Mums ‘Coats for Kids’ campaign. The children learnt that their clothing would be given to other children of a similar age to keep them clothed and warm next winter. This project provided a wonderful platform for educators to discuss the importance of giving, and demonstrating kindness and empathy towards others.

The children in the Wattle Room have recently been engaged in an inquiry in relation to endangered animals. Following a visit to the Melbourne Zoo, the children brainstormed ways that they could raise money to donate to Zoos Victoria to help support various endangered animals. The children decided to create and sell tea towels as a way of doing this. Their drawings will be printed onto linen tea towels and they are selling the tea towels to their families, friends and community members to raise funds for this important cause. The children have been involved in the design phase and collecting orders. They are excited to see their orders building and to know that they will be supporting the endangered animals.

It is important that children are connected with broader environmental and community issues in order to develop an understanding of the world around them. This helps the children to make sense of the world in which they live.
