Creating a city

Our Banksia Room community continues to develop and strengthen as the children increasingly work together for a common purpose. Interests and ideas are shared, with the children observing and listening to their peers to expand their learning. This was particularly apparent several weeks ago when Axel, Oliver and Charlie were collecting materials to construct a racetrack. Other children were interested in the collection and began using the balsa wood pieces in conjunction with the indoor blocks. They quickly discovered how fragile balsa wood could be and were encouraged to consider a more effective use for the material.

The children began brainstorming ideas for using the balsa wood and decided they would like to build a city. They shared their knowledge of cities before each chose a component to construct. Having done this they then drew plans and discussed some of the finer details.

Construction is now underway with the children demonstrating their strong connection to the project as they frequently revisit their work and acknowledge each other’s contribution. They are incorporating additional materials and paint to enhance their ideas.

The children’s current elaborate block buildings also reflect their interest in buildings and cities.
