Head of Schoolgirls Regatta

This year, students experienced a first for the Head of the Schoolgirls Regatta. Unfortunately due to weather conditions, all finals on Sunday were abandoned. The Head of the Schoolgirls Committee and boat race officials tried their best to enable crews to race on the Sunday, however consistent 70kmph gusts of wind caused conditions to be too unsafe to boat.

We were all highly impressed with the resilience of our rowers, in how they managed the news that they were unable to complete their season. All demonstrated high levels of professionalism in how they carried themselves throughout the remainder of the Regatta day.

Friday and Saturday racing saw impressive results for St Catherine’s School. Ten crews qualified for the A Finals which was a fantastic result for the rowers. Our crews were looking very ominous and were greatly looking forward to ‘having a crack’ at the finals.

A special thanks goes to all staff and students who attended to support the rowers.

The Heyington Club led by Lucy Fortey had a fantastic evening on Saturday night at their annual Head of the Schoolgirls Dinner. The generosity of parents in fundraising during the event will enable our program to meet our aims of the Strategic Purchasing Plan. All were in fantastic spirits, excited for the day ahead.

Rowers from the St Catherine’s 120  and the Geraldine Ilott have now departed for the Australian National Rowing Championships in Sydney, and will compete over this weekend. We look forward to our Senior rowers having their best racing in the final weekend of their season.

We will miss all our rowers over the winter, and look forward to seeing them all again when we recommence Rowing in Term 3.

GSV Term 1 Wrap

What a successful Term 1 of GSV Sport we have had, with St Catherine’s teams putting in highly competitive performances in all sports and divisions. The huge numbers of students that have been involved, and the retention of students to training sessions throughout the Term, is evidence of the great passion for sport that St Catherine’s students have.

Congratulations to the Intermediate A and B Tennis teams who completed the season undefeated and won through to the Grand Final to be played at Melbourne Park on Wednesday afternoon. Trailing two sets to one down and tied on games going into the final set of their quarter-final match against Toorak College, Sophie Boyce and Millie Fraser-Smith showed nerves of steel to clinch an eight games to six victory and an overall team win by two games. After that narrow escape, the girls found another gear against Sacré Cœur in the semi-finals, winning three sets to one.

Our Junior B and C Tennis teams have also been undefeated and played in the semi-finals on Thursday afternoon, while the A team just missed out on a finals berth, finishing second on the ladder. The Junior Softball A and B teams both finished second on the ladder, following nail biting finishes to the season. In a top of the table clash with Ivanhoe, the St Catherine’s A team fought gallantly, however, fell short by a couple of runs. The amount of learning, skill development and enjoyment that was seen amongst the Junior and Intermediate Softballers was outstanding.

Looking ahead to Term 2, students have already signed up for their choice of AFL, Hockey, Netball and Water Polo. Due to the large number of students participating in Junior & Intermediate Netball and Senior AFL, we will have trials during the final week of Term 1. Hockey, Junior AFL, Senior Netball and Water Polo will all commence during the first week of Term 2. The sessions scheduled for these weeks are below.

Well done to all who participated in GSV Weekly Sport in Term 1 and best of luck to our teams heading to grand finals next week!
