Australian Henley Regatta

On Saturday 24 February, St Catherine’s School’s Rowing Crews competed at the Australian Henley Regatta.

Australian Henley is a different format to any other regatta, with a time trial seeding school crews and one-on-one knock out racing for the top four placed crews in the time trial. All other crews proceed to petite finals.

Our Senior VIIIs took a clean sweep of their divisions and were victorious in the Schoolgirl Division 1 VIII+ as well as the Schoolgirl Division 2 VIII+. This is the second year running we have achieved this feat. Students also went on to win the U21 Division (St Catherine’s 120) and the B Grade VIII+ (Geraldine Ilott). This is the third year running we have won VIIIs divisions at the Henley Regatta. A special mention goes to the crew of the Geraldine Ilott, that defeated the Carey Grammar First VIII to progress to the Final of the B Grade VIII+.

The Senior quad (Tallent), competed in the C Grade 4+, but was overpowered by Club rowers from Melbourne Rowing Club in their Heat. They also competed in the U21 4+ Division where they progressed into their final and raced against multiple Australian representatives from Firbank Grammar, in a highly competitive opening stage of the race. This is a great accomplishment and indicates promising signs heading into HOSG.

Geelong Regatta

Last Saturday, the Junior and Intermediate St Catherine’s School Rowing squads competed in the Rowing Geelong Regatta on the Barwon River.

Once again, our girls were faced with challenging conditions, although this week Geelong provided us with a roaring tailwind. The girls appreciated the change from a roaring headwind!

Our Intermediate crews set the tone for another fantastic day, with all crews noticeably improving their racing since the last regatta. With crews now having been set for a number of weeks, all crews are learning the specific idiosyncrasies of what makes their crew ‘tick’. Crew combinations are vital in a sport as team oriented as Rowing, and it is encouraging to see our Intermediate crews working so well together.

In addition to working as a crew on the water, the Intermediates have fully embraced looking like a crew, with matching crew apparel to complement their St Catherine’s Rowing uniform. This includes socks, slides and sunglasses which are not only stylish but very practical!

Our Junior Rowing squads continued their very successful start to the regatta season with all crews recording very impressive performances again on the weekend. Having never encountered such strong tail wind conditions, all our girls did a fabulous job adapting to the fast conditions.

Congratulations to the following crews, who won the A final of their respective divisions:

Year 9 Heyington: Isabella Mangano, Sophie Gough, Isabella Hornor, Jessica Yang, Katherine Lee

Year 9 Spirit: Mia Jurcevic, Eliza Mailer, Sara Zayontz, Madeleine Hardy, Alessia Tzelepis

With less than three weeks until Head of the School Girls, all our crews will be training hard to improve on their personal best performance at the main regatta.
