News from Year 6: Exploring Federation

In preparation for our Term 3 Study Tour to Canberra, Year 6 students have been exploring the history of Federation and the Australian Government.

L-R: Zoe Dixon, Emilia Keogh and Emily Wang with their Federation Research Projects on Henry Parkes and Alfred Deakin
This investigation delved into Australia’s colonial past, highlighting how the States once operated like separate countries before Federation. In groups, the girls explored each State’s path to Federation and the motivations behind the Federation movement.
The girls also conducted individual research on key figures in the Federation campaign, such as Henry Parkes, Edmund Barton, and Alfred Deakin.
“One reason for Federation is that the six colonies wanted to unite as one nation free from the British rule.” Aaliya Loona.
“One benefit of Federation was having a unified national Defence Force and eliminating border control between States.” Samara Grinsell.
The Canberra Study Tour is always an exciting experience for Year 6. A major highlight of the Study Tour is visiting Parliament House, where the girls gain a deeper understanding of the Australian Government and the legislative process.
The girls engage in role play, taking on positions such as the Speaker, Prime Minister, and Opposition Leader, as well as Members representing different electorates.
“I am looking forward to learning more about how the Federal Parliament works.” Isabella Hampson.
“I am excited about the role play and understanding how laws are made.” Jiayi (Kitty) Huang
