Barbreck News: A Blueprint for Learning Success
Being a successful learner encompasses having mastery over a range of routines, attitudes, skills, approaches, and strategies that contribute to learning well.
Within Barbreck we have developed a program specifically for our Years 5 and 6 students. The program, ‘Barbreck Blueprint for Successful Learners’ focuses on five modules the girls undertake throughout the year.
The modules are set out in the table below.
MODULE | COMPONENTS |
Starting well | Organisation & Time Management
Approaches to Learning |
Rubrics & Feedback | Understanding a rubric Analysing rubric criteria Planning for success Interpreting and applying feedback |
Reading to Learn | Comprehension Creating a glossary Notetaking Writing summaries |
Recording and Representing Content | Informal outline Pictorial notes and pictographs Combination notes, pictures, and summaries Graphic Organisers (Part 1) [Sequence & Comparison] Graphic Organisers (Part 2) [Cause & Effect, Problem/Solution] Free-flowing webs Academic Notebook Entry |
Self-Assessment and Reflection | Self-assessment using a rubric for submitted work Review of Approaches to Learning Goals What learning strategies worked? Reflection on Barbreck Blueprint for Successful Learners’ Program |
The first module focuses on assisting the girls to commence their school year well, including developing skills to help them become highly organised, ready for each day and in the mindset to get the most from their days at school. These skills will stand the girls in good stead in readiness for Senior School and well into their adulthood.
Rubrics are a great guide for students to track and better their learning progress. Developing a good understanding of rubrics and feedback provided by teachers helps girls progress to higher levels of individual achievement and growth.
The remaining modules focus on strategies that deepen learning and help our girls develop ways to record their learning of content and concepts clearly and meaningfully. These skills will assist our girls considerably as they transition into the Senior School. From this foundation, their abilities to recognise, decode, discern, retain, and understand new information and key learning concepts will be significantly deepened.
The Barbreck Blueprint for Successful Learners will be introduced later this term. We look forward to continuing to share the details of this important Program.
Parent Teacher Meetings
We are pleased to announce will be holding in-person Parent-Teacher Meetings on Thursday 7 March from 1.30pm to 7.00pm for parents who would like to discuss their daughter’s academic or school-related progress at this stage of the year.
These meetings provide a wonderful opportunity to meet with your daughter’s teacher to discuss her areas of strength, areas for improvement, learning behaviours, progress made and ways in which you can support her learning at home.
Please note that on this day, student dismissal time will be brought forward to 12.30pm to enable a smooth transition between the school day and the scheduled interview meetings. We ask parents to be punctual at these pick-up times, as staff have scheduled meetings to attend close to these times.
For those parents who cannot collect their daughter at this time, Teams Kids is available. If you have not registered your daughter already, please go to their website by clicking HERE to do so.
Meeting Information
Interviews can be booked via the Parent Portal and will be conducted in classrooms on the lower floor of the Junior School. Instructions on how to access the online booking system are available via the link below.
USING THE ONLINE BOOKING SYSTEM
Classroom Teachers
To ensure interviews run smoothly and all parents have suitable time with Homeroom teachers, meetings are limited to 12 minutes. Should you feel additional time is necessary, I encourage you to arrange an appointment directly with your daughter’s teacher at the conclusion of your interview.
Specialist Teachers
As you will appreciate, our specialist staff teach across many Year levels in the Junior School and cannot meet with every parent. With this in mind, we ask that bookings for specialist staff are limited to pressing issues which require discussion. Specialist meetings are limited to six minutes and bookings can be made via the online booking system.
We look forward to seeing you and discussing your child’s learning progress at Barbreck.
