Exploring the Language of Wire

In the Early Learning Centre, the teachers provide the children with various opportunities to express their thinking, theories and wonderings. We use the term ‘languages’ to convey an understanding that children have different languages to express themselves. These languages may include painting, sculpture, drawing, block building, dance, dramatic play, singing and many more.

The Wattle Room children have been exploring the language of wire. Before the children began exploring this medium, we introduced it to the whole group. This was an opportunity for the children to explore the wire. We talked about how to work with the wire safely and also introduced the children to the various wire tools. The children briefly explored the wire within the group setting and talked about what they could do with the wire. The children then explored further as individuals at a table where they were provided with wire of different thicknesses and wire tools.

The Wattle Room children in the St Catherine’s ELC have been exploring the language of wire.

The teachers challenged the children by asking “I wonder how you could connect two pieces of wire together?” After this exploration, the teachers introduced wire with the language of clay. This was to extend upon the children’s exploration of insects by introducing the wire with the clay. We have also explored making love hearts with wire and beads, another opportunity for the children to see the potential of wire.
