St Catherine’s blitz the blizzard

Congratulations to all the students who participated in the 2017 Subaru Victorian Interschools Cross Country Championships and contributed towards St Catherine’s School’s win in the Girls Primary and Secondary School Division Championship. The St Catherine’s girls displayed outstanding effort and teamwork, racing hard in the testing conditions.

St Catherine’s had three top 3 performances. Julia Kent (Year 6) finished 1st in the Division 4 Classic Race, while Zara Bongiorno (Year 7) and Lucy McAllister (Year 4) finished 2nds in Division 3 and 3rd in Division 5 respectively. Annelise Cody (Year 10), Claudia Richardson (Year 11) and Zoe Hall (Year 6) also competed extremely well, finishing 4th in their respective Divisions.

The key to St Catherine’s success was the strong emphasis on team, which was highlighted through the outstanding team performances that saw St Catherine’s teams place on the podium in every event. Overall, St Catherine’s Primary School Team finished on 42 points, ahead of Lauriston 15 and MLC 15 points. While St Catherine’s Secondary School Team finished on 60 points, ahead of MLC 44 and Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School 40 points.

With such strong performances, many of our St Catherine’s team members will qualify through to the Australian Championships in September. Thank you to all the parents and staff, particularly Mr Crebbin for all their support and wisdom on the mountain. The girls are excited by the challenges that lie ahead at the nationals.

GSV

GSV weekly sport is very much underway for Term 3, with large numbers of students representing the Shool in Soccer and Badminton. A new partnership between St Catherine’s School and the South Melbourne Football Club has seen our Years 7 and 8 Soccer players provided with outstanding coaching expertise. The cold August mornings have not deterred these students, with approximately 50 girls attending and thoroughly enjoying the training sessions. In a short period of time, the students have developed their skills and structural knowledge of the game, while having a lot of fun doing so. This has transferred to the match pitch with some tight fought matches in the opening rounds. Likewise, the Intermediate and Senior Soccer Teams have started their seasons with enthusiasm. The Senior team started with a strong victory over Korowa, while the Intermediate team battled out a hard fought draw, also against Korowa.

The shuttles have been flying on the Badminton court, with St Catherine’s fielding strong teams in all divisions. Approximately 35 Junior players have been successfully competing each week. The Intermediate team welcomes back the Year 9 students to strengthen their numbers, while the Senior team commenced their season with a tight game against Korowa.

A reminder that all team news, fixtures and selections can be found through the relevant links on the Sports Portal Page. It has been great to see the continued involvement and enthusiasm from the St Catherine’s students and we look forward to the rest of the GSV weekly season.
