Valuing Diversity

Students in Year 5 have been looking at communities and how we value diversity. They have been celebrating how differences have a positive influence on the wellbeing of our communities.

Students were given the choice to research and present their findings in any way they felt appropriate. The topics included:

  • cultural similarities
  • differences and celebrations
  • discrimination such as sexism and racism in sporting and cultural groups
  • enabling inclusivity for students with a range of abilities
  • how First Nations Australians were once treated

Some of our Year 5 students provided their reflections below:

Olivia: Last term in Health, we learnt about Valuing Diversity. Everyone made a project on either PowerPoint, Word, or any other system with a partner. We talked about how to value diversity at School, at home etc. Some ways to value diversity are:

1: including everyone in your groups

2: showing kindness to all, even if they are a different race

3: treating others how you would want to be treated yourself

Tania: In Health we have been working on diversity, each student worked in pairs on a certain topic.

Vita: Tania and I were given the topic of Celebrating Differences. We made a PowerPoint presentation about it. We added different cultures to it. We also included how we celebrate differences at School and at home.

Ellyse and Charlotte: Over the last few weeks, we have been focusing on valuing diversity and celebrating differences. We split into pairs and had to choose a topic. Charlotte and I chose racism. A few of the things we focused on were, what is racism, why are people racist and information about racism. Here is a little quote that we wrote, “We may all look different, but deep down we’re all the same.”

Anna and Coco: Over the last few weeks we have been exploring inclusion and what it means to us. We have looked at ways we can be an inclusive School and how we can make everyone feel included and embrace different cultures. We also looked at the facilities like the lifts and ramps and how they can help people with injuries and disabilities.

Gigi and Bella: Bella and I chose the topic of disability access in our School and being inclusive towards all. We made a video giving examples of diseases, disabilities, and religions. We showed all the things our School has to support. We have lifts and ramps all around the School. Bella and I picked this topic because we thought we could represent this in a way that people would understand it.
