Head of Science recognised as extraordinary educator

St Catherine’s School’s Head of Science, Ms Vanessa Jackson-McRae has been recognised for her outstanding contribution to Science education, announced as a winner in The Educator 2023 Hot List.

“Vanessa’s commitment to providing diverse scientific opportunities for students is a testament to her extensive knowledge of science, Science education, and effective student learning,” shares Michelle Carroll, Principal of St Catherine’s School.

“Ms Jackson-McRae’s direct involvement with the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) is testament to her excellence in Science teaching, with contributions to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS), as well as playing a pivotal role in rewriting the VCE Chemistry Study Design as a member of the Chemistry Review Panel for the last two Study Designs.”

“Her passion for science and dedication to girls’ learning in this field is evident through her profound knowledge, contributions to Science curricula, her active involvement in the professional community, and innovative approaches that inspire a passion for science in her students,” says Michelle Carroll.

Ms Jackson-McRae has also been awarded the Victorian Chemistry Teacher of the Year Award in 2020 and selected to work in the School of Chemistry Research Laboratories at Melbourne University on a frontier research project. She is Chair of the RACI Victorian Education Committee and also introduced the Science Students@Work Program to St Catherine’s which saw students work with Monash and Melbourne Universities.

One of Ms Jackson-McRae’s most recent innovations is her approach to Science in Year 10 where students undertake Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as semester-long subjects to deepen their learning and understanding of the disciplines. This enables students to undertake an additional 1.5 years of Science in Year 10 and has resulted in a significant rise in VCE achievement and an increased interest in STEM throughout the School.

The Educator Hot List Awards evaluates educators from across Australia on the overall impact their work has had on the Early Learning to Year 12 education sector over the past 12 months. Educators must demonstrate expertise in linking theory and practice in the school environment and designing and implementing innovations that provide students with high-quality educational experiences.
