Class of ’23: Mietta Passon

As their time as students enters the final chapter, a number of our Class of 2023 reflect on their Life at St Catherine’s.

Life at St Catherine’s: Mietta Passon
Class of 2023

What have been the highlights of your time at St Catherine’s?

I find it difficult to pinpoint a singular time at St Catherine’s that stands out as my specific highlight, as there are so many cumulative moments that have made my journey at School so special.

However, upon recent events, I believe one of my most monumental highlights at St Catherine’s was winning the House Cup in 2023. As the Davis House Co-Captains, Freya and I embarked on a mission at the beginning of the year to foster a close-knit and harmonious community of girls. Their infectious enthusiasm propelled us to success in various House events. I take immense pride in the strong Davis community that Freya, the rest of the Davis Year 12 Cohort, and I helped create this year.

What co-curricular activities or clubs were you involved in? What did you learn from these?

From Year 7 onwards, I always enjoyed being a part of as many co-curricular activities as possible, mainly stemming from sport. My participation in sport has taught me valuable life lessons beyond the field or court. It has instilled in me qualities such as teamwork, discipline, perseverance, and the ability to handle both victory and defeat with grace. These experiences have not only contributed to my physical wellbeing but have also shaped my character and helped me develop a strong work ethic, all of which I give credit to the amazing Sport Department at St Catherine’s who never failed to encourage us throughout our pursuits.

What were your favourite subjects?
I have always enjoyed studying Science. I love the embedded creativity and the sense of being on the edge of discovery. Throughout my VCE journey I was lucky enough to study all the Science courses St Catherine’s has to offer with my favourite being Chemistry. Ms Jackson-McRae played a significant role in nurturing my passion for this subject. Her engaging teaching style and unwavering support not only made Chemistry enjoyable, but also inspired me to apply for degrees in Science. I will forever be grateful for the knowledge and enthusiasm she instilled in me during 2023.

Can you describe a significant academic achievement or project you’re proud of?

The project at St Catherine’s that I hold in the highest regard is the establishment of the Big Freeze. Annually, the event was always met with enthusiasm and support as both teachers and students endured the cold water. Over three years we managed to raise in excess of $30,000. I am so excited to see the Davis girls continue this fundraiser through 2024 and beyond.

What do you plan to study post School? Where do you hope to study?

I am really interested in the Advanced Global Science Challenges course at Monash University, as it offers an unparalleled opportunity to delve into complex scientific issues on a global scale, fostering a deep understanding of the interconnected challenges our world faces today.

This program not only aligns with my passion for science but also provides a platform to collaborate on an international scale, working front-line with corporations as we explore solutions that can have a meaningful impact on addressing pressing global problems. The prospect of contributing to innovative research and strategies to address these challenges is what truly excites me about this course.

How do you believe St Catherine’s and your teachers have helped you reach your goals?

Throughout Year 12 all my teachers have contributed immensely to my academic achievements. However, Mrs Morgan has truly been my biggest cheerleader. Her unwavering support, dedication, and belief in our potential has been the driving force behind our success. Her guidance extended to the teaching of Health and Human Development and to imbuing valuable life skills and personal growth amongst the Year level. Her mentorship has been instrumental in shaping my academic journey, and I am profoundly grateful for the positive impact she has had on my life.

What advice would you provide to future Year 12 students?

Wash your blue jumper as little as possible. If you wash it too often it’ll lose its beautiful vibrant blue. Trust me, it was a traumatic experience. However, try to enjoy Year 12 as much as possible because time truly flies, and before you know it, exams will be over.

Stay focused, work hard, but also remember to find balance in your life. Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, and don’t forget to take care of your wellbeing along the way.

You’ve got this!
