Life at St Catherine’s: Georgia Szer
Class of 2023

What have been the highlights of your time at St Catherine’s?

House Arts has been a significant highlight for me every year, but especially the last year. Being a dramaturge for Davis when we set the record receiving a clean sweep as we won all the categories, was an amazing experience. Not only due to winning, but the fact that we all contributed together to do so.

I also really enjoyed Valedictory. Seeing our whole year come together for the last time to celebrate with each other was immensely wholesome and meaningful. Also getting to be Valedictorian and deliver the speech to reminisce over years at St Catherine’s and thank everyone was an honour.

What co-curricular activities or clubs were you involved in? What did you learn from these?

My deep engagement in the co-curricular life of the School has enabled me to learn many valuable lessons. I am an avid participant in Sports, I have been a part of the St Catherine’s Rowing Program, achieving medal finishes in a range of national competitions as a member of the Second Senior 8 Crew in both 2022 and 2023.

In recognition of my long-serving contribution to the Skiing Program, I was also elected Snowsports Captain for 2023. Through these sports I learned the importance of teamwork. I also participated in Senior Debating where I developed my English skills.

What were your favourite subjects?

I am a Humanities student, so I cultivate towards English and Legal Studies.

How do you handle challenges or setbacks in your academic pursuits?

After receiving an academic result that disappoints me, I allow myself a few minutes to be upset over it and then I force myself to move on to the next thing. Whether this be meeting a teacher to focus on areas for improvement or learning from my mistakes and ensuring I do not make the same mistake next time.

What do you plan to study post School? Where do you hope to study?
Arts degree, then transition to a Juris Doctor at Melbourne University.

How do you believe St Catherine’s and your teachers have helped you reach your goals?

My teachers at St Catherine’s have been committed to helping me achieve my personal best, through marking the endless work I give them or constantly meeting with me in the mornings or after school, enabling me to constantly improve to reach my academic goals of receiving the results I strive for.

What are your short-term and long-term career goals after graduating from school?

Short term I hope to receive the ATAR to get into the course I am looking at. In the long term, I hope to become a human rights lawyer.

How do you envision using your education to make a positive impact on your community or society at large?

My St Catherine’s education has taught me more than just academic lessons, it has taught me life skills that are invaluable, such as kindness and the importance of teamwork that I will use as I enter adulthood and the workforce.

What advice would you provide to future Year 12 students?

To enjoy every second of Year 12 as it flies by, and to always reach out for help if you are struggling with any work as the teachers are there to support you in any endeavour you may have.
