Class of ’23: Brydie Read

As their time as students enters the final chapter, a number of our Class of 2023 reflect on their Life at St Catherine’s.

Life at St Catherine’s: Brydie Read
Class of 2023

What have been the highlights of your time at St Catherine’s?
Being part of the GSV Aquatic Team every year since Year 4 and then finally being able to Captain the Team I have been a part of for so many years!

Other highlights are making many friendships that I know will last after the conclusion of school and making so many memories as well.

What co-curricular activities or clubs were you involved in? What did you learn from these?
I was a part of the GSV Diving and Swimming Team this year and was Captain for both.

I learnt that being a part of the Team is much more fun than actually winning. The best times I had were training with my teammates and watching other people excel at what they are doing and seeing them succeed.

What were your favourite subjects?
Definitely PE. It is something that I am interested in after school ends and relates to the careers that I can see myself doing.

Can you describe a significant academic achievement or project you’re proud of?
Placing first in PE in Year 11. It made me feel confident about undertaking PE Units 3&4.

How do you handle challenges or setbacks in your academic pursuits?
Rather than constantly looking back on the setbacks I always tried to put them behind me and move forward onto the next challenge and see what I can do to overcome it, as well as learning from the setbacks and challenges.

What do you plan to study post School?
Physiotherapy in the long run but to start off with either Science or Biomedince or Sports and Exercise Science.

Where do you hope to study?
Melbourne University or Deakin University.

How do you believe St Catherine’s and your teachers have helped you reach your goals?
The teachers at St Catherine’s have been supportive of me and have always helped me when I’ve reached out. I believe I wouldn’t be where I am academically without them.

What are your short-term and long-term career goals after graduating from school?
I’m still not 100% sure of what I want to do specifically but definitely something in the Sports Medicine area.

What skills or knowledge have you gained during your education that you believe will be valuable in your future career?
I’ve learned that I don’t have to go through challenges alone and that there are always people around me who want to help.

In 2023, the Year 12 theme was ‘Conquer.’ What does this mean to you?
This word to me means to overcome the challenges that the world throws at you. You never know what the universe has in store for you, but you always need to be ready for challenges.

What advice would you provide to future Year 12 students?
Make sure to always give yourself a break. Even if it’s still doing the sport you love or going for walks.
