Book Drive Assists Aboriginal Literacy Foundation

At the end of Term 3, Stella and I took part in completing our Dark Blue Leadership Diploma. After searching through different organisations, we finally decided to help the Aboriginal Literacy Foundation. This Foundation recognises the lack of books available for Indigenous children, resulting in a literary divide throughout Australia.

We decided to put together a casual clothes day in the hope of getting more people involved. On the last day of Term 3, the girls were asked to wear a touch of black, red, or yellow to show their respect to the Indigenous Australians.

Before this day, the girls brought in pre-loved books they were ready to pass on to people in need. As the day went ahead, hundreds of books were brought in. We were beyond grateful. Many students, from all Year levels, wrote cards to the children who were receiving their books. It was such a nice touch for the children to receive these encouraging messages.

We received 350 to 400 books from students and teachers. From there we transported the books to Ballarat, where the Literacy Foundation store their books. From there, the Aboriginal Literacy Foundation either keep the books at the location or move them to different parts of Australia, including the Northern Territory and Queensland, where their main ‘in need’ schools are located.

We were thrilled with the response to our call to action, and so was the Aboriginal Literacy Foundation. I am keeping in contact with the workers there, and I am happy to say the books have reached many grateful children who are using them to develop their literary skills.
