Active, Belonging, Succeeding, Failing – Health Education in Barbreck

The Preps checked their heart rates after completing a run

Prep students have enjoyed exploring the topic of Being Active. They have discovered their pulse and noted how it beats faster after they have run the around the Village Green. We have discussed the reasons why and looked at pictures of the human body. Some interesting questions showing curious minds followed.

Year 1 students have been discovering feelings. They have been identifying when and why we have certain feelings, as well as recognising similarities and differences in individuals and groups. They have identified how they belong to certain groups and described how they can make others feel they belong.

Exploring actions that help make the classroom a healthy, safe and active place has been the focus in Year 2. The girls have compiled list of “Dos’ and ‘Don’ts” for the classroom and explored games to keep them active, both in the classroom as well as outside. In Year 3, the students have been exploring how success, challenges and failure strengthen identities. They have listed their strengths and things that challenge them. They discussed things they have failed at and how we can turn this into learning, and identity strengthening experiences.

In Year 4, the students have been scouring magazines, looking on TV and other places where companies advertise. They have discovered many health messages in the media and discussed how and what they use to influence us. The girls had to decide if the source of information was credible and reliable. They recognised there are many messages for a range of different areas of our health. For help with any mental health they know they can talk to trusted adults or Kids Helpline.

“Who am I?” has been a fun exercise with the many new faces in Year 5. The students interviewed classmates and made a poster about this person. Students then had to guess who this person was. They examined how their identities are influenced by people and places. The girls are continuing to identify how valuing diversity can positively influence our wellbeing.
