St Cath’s at Newman College Forum Dinner

Accompanied by Head of Careers and Future Pathways Ms Kristy Tine, a recent visit to Melbourne University’s Newman College gave four of our Year 11 students a valuable opportunity to explore university life beyond the classroom. Through a guided tour, dinner in the historic dining hall, and conversations with current students and alumni, the evening offered insight into the vibrant academic, cultural and community life offered by residential college living. Below are reflections from some of those who attended:

I had a wonderful time at the Newman Dinner. We enjoyed an engaging tour of the college, and the meal was delicious. Upon entering the dining hall, we were greeted by the beautiful voices of the Newman Choir, setting a warm and uplifting tone for the evening. It was a glimpse into the rich co-curricular life the College has to offer.
We also had the pleasure of hearing from two former collegians. Their stories were different but equally inspiring, providing valuable insight into the vibrant life at Newman College.
We were fortunate to be seated with two current students, who generously shared their own experiences of the College.
As a boarder from the country, I’m very grateful for the opportunity to visit Newman and feel excited by the prospect of attending a college one day.

I had an incredible time at the Newman Dinner. When we arrived, we were given a tour of the College, which looks like an absolutely stunning place to live. Our tour guides were very engaging and showed us all the best places on the campus. Then, we were serenaded into the dining hall by the beautiful College choir and sat down for dinner. As we were eating, two guest speakers reflected on their time at Newman. They detailed the advantages of attending college and their fun experiences. Previously, I had seriously considered going to college, especially since I live in Melbourne but after hearing how beneficial and exciting it is, I am considering it even more so. Overall, the experience was a 10/10 and I am really glad I went.

The Newman Dinner allowed me to get a clear indication of what college life is like. After a tour of the campus, which was breathtaking, we headed inside the dining hall for dinner. Once seated, we talked to two current students living on campus. For me, this was the most valuable takeaway of our visit. We discussed the daily life of a student living at Newman, including classes and extracurricular activities. It was refreshing to get real answers from real students as they also discussed the challenges of living away from home. I found it really interesting to learn that when you attend meals in the dining hall, it is a phone free space that encourages students to sit next to people they have never met.
Overall, this visit taught me that to have the best university experience, I must put myself out there, try new things and not to be afraid of change. Whilst leaving school seems like something in the far-off future, this insight has taught me to be excited for what’s to come, and to face challenges head on.
