The Wonder League Robotics Competition captures up to 85,000 entries from all over the world. Students use coding, computer science, tangible learning and STEAM education.  Year 7 students Giselle Upton, Mia Upton and Emma Peele have entered this competition for the second year and have now been invited to the final invitational round of the competition.

The Wonder League Robotics competition requires students to reflect on a story-based mission and produce a coded response, using higher order thinking, problem-solving and application of the design process and patience and perseverance.  Mia, Giselle and Emma were required to design an attachment to flip five cubes to reveal letters hidden on the bottom. To complete this task, there was a 1/7776 chance of flipping each cube successfully.  They successfully flipped three cubes and filmed this over 300 times to get a result.

To complete the requirements of the story-based mission, the team had to reflect on a real-world problem in their environment.  During the process, they reflected on the St Catherine’s School Rowing and focussed their efforts on designing a prototype drone that would explore the Yarra River and remove waste products. Mia, Emma and Giselle completed this over two weekends and we look forward to hearing more about their progress through the next stages of the competition.
