Morongo Regatta

It had been a long time coming but on Saturday the St Catherine’s School Junior and Intermediate crews finally had the opportunity to race on the Barwon River. It was a fantastic day for St Catherine’s with the girls representing the School with pride – both on and off the water.

The cross head wind made conditions at Barwon slightly more challenging but this did not phase our crews. A particular mention must be made of all coxswains, who did a phenomenal job of keeping their crews safe despite the conditions. The brilliant efforts of all coxswains on Saturday reinforced our assertions of coxswains being the most important person in the boat (no offence rowers!). Thank you, and well done to: Claudia James, Annabel Brend, Ella Carton, Isabella Hall, Zara Carter, Sophie Gorton, Ruby Seymour, Katherine Lee, Alessia Tzelepis and Soraya Meor Zain Azman.

For our Junior crews, this was their first regatta ever. All Junior crews are to be congratulated for the professionalism with which they approached their racing on Saturday. It was a fantastic first regatta, and we look forward to seeing our girls continue to improve and develop in the lead up to Head of the School Girls.

For our Intermediates, it was their first standard length (1,000m) regatta for the season. Off the back of a solid two week training period, the standard of Rowing displayed by our girls was very impressive.

Congratulations to the following crews who won their respective divisions:

10 Bernie – Ella Carton, Charlotte Murdoch, Lara Nattrass, Georgia Green, Charlotte Gough

9 Spirit – Soraya Meor Zain Azman, Tabitha Manson, Madeleine Hardy, Sara Zayontz, Holly McGlaughlin

9 Bernie – Molly Robertson, Sophie Gough, Isabella Hornor, Jessica Yang, Ruby Seymour

Finally, Rowing is often described as ‘the ultimate team sport’ and this was definitely the case on Saturday. With illness and injury prevalent in both our Intermediate and Junior squads, a number of our girls stepped up to race with crews other than their own to ensure all were able to compete. Thank you very much to the following students – your cooperation and sportsmanship is both admirable and much appreciated: Claudia James, Julia Stern, Alice McCleery, Sienna-Eliza Podolak, Sophie Gorton and Ruby Seymour.

With the first regatta of the season finally under our belt, we now have even more reason to be excited about the rest of the racing season. Keep up the great work girls, and go St Catherine’s!
