Epworth Surgery Workshops

On 2 August 20 Year 10 girls were privileged to have the opportunity to attend the Epworth Surgery Workshop, accompanied by Ms Macgeorge and Ms Vu.

When we arrived, we were greeted by Mr Frank Chen and Dr Larissa Roeske who were extremely welcoming and introduced us to other doctors and nurses who assisted us throughout the day.

After being divided into two groups we were guided through a hypothetical diagnosis by Dr Roeske, which was a great insight into the life and work of a general practitioner. We then participated in a surgery workshop where we moved through four stations – anaesthesia, key-hole surgery, basic suturing and a sterilising procedure. We spent 15 minutes at each station and were guided by professionals in each field who helped show us the different aspects of surgery.

These workshops provided us with an idea of one of the many directions that we could take our careers in once we finish School, as well as improving our knowledge and interest in the medical fields.

We would like to especially thank Mr Frank Chen and Dr Larissa Roeske as well as all the teachers and staff at Epworth Hospital who made this incredible experience possible.
