From the Principal: Speech Night 2024

Yesterday, we celebrated our annual Speech Night at St Catherine’s, where we recognised the amazing achievements of our Senior School girls. From academics to co-curricular activities and service, the evening highlighted the incredible talent and hard work of our students. It was a true reflection of the spirit and excellence that makes our School so special.

I took the opportunity to acknowledge and thank the three members of the School’s Leadership Team sadly departing us.

After 25 years of dedicated and diligent service, Mrs Gina Peele, Deputy Principal of School Operations, is saying goodbye to St Catherine’s. Over the years, Gina has made a significant impact, especially in the co-curricular and sports programs. Her work on the Global Exchange program has been a standout, offering amazing opportunities for our students. Gina’s influence on rowing at St Catherine’s has been nothing short of incredible, with the team’s successes largely down to her passion and commitment to the sport.

Mrs Ceri Lloyd, Deputy Principal, Head of Senior School, is also leaving after 25 years of dedicated commitment and service. She has been a key leader in our Teaching and Learning program, driving our impressive academic achievements. Her legacy, particularly within the English faculty where she led for 15 years, is significant. Ceri has set a high standard for teachers across all subjects, inspiring excellence and pushing our students to reach their full potential.

Ms Karen McArdle, Head of Barbreck, leaves for warmer climes in Queensland after 6 years of strong leadership. Under her guidance, Barbreck has leapt ahead in its academic standing and is one of the leading Junior Schools in Melbourne.

There is one more staff departure I had to mention. After 35 years of teaching, Mrs Brigid Weereratne is retiring. Brigid has had a profound impact on Art, having served as Head of Art for over a decade, and is beloved by students and staff. Her contributions to House Arts and the culture of St Catherine’s will be remembered for years to come.

To Gina, Ceri, Karen and Brigid, we are grateful for your time at the school and while your departures are indeed our loss, we wish you all the very best in the future. On behalf of our community, I thank you for all that you have done.

Last night was a great opportunity to reflect on 2024 as a period of transition and change. 2025 promises more change. Our incoming Principal, Ms Natalie Charles will bring great energy, intellect, enthusiasm and most importantly a love of education and deep commitment to the students in her care. I have already had numerous conversations with Ms Charles and I am extremely confident next year will be a great one for our school under her leadership.

To our graduating Year 12 students, you are a remarkable group and we are all so proud of you. Last night marked their final time wearing the St Catherine’s uniform and Blue Ribbon. Teachers and parents have supported you, and now the next chapter is yours. Big changes await in the year ahead, and we know you’ll continue to thrive.

And Michelle Obama probably said it best…

“Empower yourselves with a good education, then get out there and use that education to build a country worthy of your boundless promise.”

Mr Robert Marshall, Interim Principal
