The STEM program in Barbreck this year has been jam packed with discoveries and experiments.

From Biology in Term 1, Chemistry in Term 2 and now moving into Physics this term, our students have been exploring the sciences.

Our garden has been growing throughout the year thanks to the planting efforts from all Year levels – make sure to check out our sunflowers!

In Term 1, the life cycles and adaptations of living things were the focus before learning about the human body. Our Year 6 students even coded their own video games to present their unit on cells.

Term 2 saw the girls following the scientific formula, designing experiments, measuring reactions, testing materials, and exploring the science of cooking. From volcanoes and elephant toothpaste to fire extinguishers and inflating balloons, every reaction was a great reaction in STEM.

A few definite highlights were changing the freezing point to make ice cream, comparing pancake recipes, determining the state of matter for jelly and baking sourdough from a grown starter.

This term, across Barbreck we’ll be looking at different forces, how light and sound works, the transfer of energy from different sources as well as designing and debugging codes.

As this term builds momentum, we’ll even look at the physics behind some Olympic sports, and design and build machines. Things are definitely on the move in STEM!
