Nurturing Healthy Interactions: A Term 2 Journey
As Term 2 unfolds in our Barbreck Specialist Health classes, the focus is shining on the vital aspect of interacting with others. From Prep to Year 4, students delve into learning about emotions, behaviours, and values during their Health classes. This focus paves the way for healthier relationships and inclusive communities.
In Prep, young minds navigate the complexities of social dynamics, exploring feelings of exclusion and the power of kindness and fairness. They learn to recognise their own emotions and respond to challenges with resilience. They also discover the importance of inclusion and respect for others’ feelings and personal space.
Year 1 expands upon the foundation laid in Prep, focusing on fostering a sense of belonging and appreciation for diversity. Through lessons on encouraging others and celebrating differences, this nurtures a culture of acceptance and empathy.
Year 2 delves deeper into the concept of inclusion, contrasting it with exclusion and emphasising the importance of creating a safe and respectful environment. Students learn to identify similarities and differences, recognising the richness of cultural diversity and the value of respecting others’ perspectives.
In Years 3 and 4, students delve into more complex issues such as stereotypes, discrimination, and empathy. They confront biases head-on, exploring ways to challenge discrimination and promote understanding.
With a continued focus on consent and positive interactions, students of all ages strive to create a more inclusive and respectful community.
As Term 2 progresses, the journey of health and interpersonal relationships continues to unfold. From the smallest acts of kindness to the profound lessons on empathy and acceptance, each step forward brings us closer to a healthier, more harmonious society.
Teaching our Barbreck girls content such as this is a great privilege. It is remarkable to watch how the girls absorb, understand, and put into practice these learnings.

Years 5 and 6 Health
In Term 2, students in Years 5 and 6 are learning and developing their knowledge surrounding consent, sexual education, and respectful relationships.
We recognise that certain aspects of the Health curriculum, particularly those concerning relationships, and sexuality, may be delicate topics for parents to broach with their children. The lessons covering these areas will introduce various concepts tailored to each age group. Below, you will find details about the Consent and Respectful Relationships Program.
In this program, students delve into:
- Protective Safety (Body Safety)
- Understanding Consent
- Nurturing Respectful Relationships: Embracing Emotional Literacy, Identifying Personal Strengths, Embracing Positive Coping Mechanisms, and Mastering Problem-Solving Skills
- Exploring the Journey of Growing Up
- Puberty
The lessons will explore the physical, social, and emotional changes that occur throughout different stages of life.
Each session will be delivered appropriately to the students’ age groups. We anticipate this unit may prompt questions or discussions at home. To assist you in supporting your child as they navigate these topics, we have compiled a list of websites for your reference:

Additionally, we have aligned our Consent and Respectful Relationships Program with Vanessa Hamilton’s Talking the Talk Program. This ensures a comprehensive approach to fostering understanding and healthy attitudes towards relationships and sexuality.
