We are so lucky to have a vibrant and busy Music Program at St Catherine’s.

I am so privileged to have been able to join the highly talented and experienced Music staff here at St Catherine’s to continue this work. I have to say I have felt incredibly welcomed by all and would like to thank everyone for the very warm welcome I’ve received.

Term 1 saw a number of musical opportunities for our students:

  • Recitals
  • Assembly performances
  • School Open Days

A highlight for Term 1 was Viva Voci performing with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for the recent Mahler Symphony.

We also saw our Barbreck String Quartet providing musical support for the Order of Australia Inspiring Oration, held at Melbourne Town Hall.

Finishing off Term 1 was the Concerto Concert, with amazing performances from the following students:

  • Chloe (Coco) Butterfield – Shelmerdine Violin Scholarship Recipient, Praga Violin
  • Kathrina Ang – Shelmerdine Violin Scholarship Recipient, Postiglione Violin
  • Opal Scheele – Danielle Lloyd Violin Scholarship Recipient, Colin-Mezin Violin
  • Charlotte Upton
  • Jisu Yang
  • Yiwen (Crystal) Huang
  • Wenxuan (Elsa) Zhou
  • Rosemary Hill – exchange student from St Catherine’s Bramley in the UK

I would like to especially thank Mrs Lisa Cook for her leadership in organising the evening as well as conducting the orchestra. I would also like to thank Mrs Kate Denmead for her work accompanying the students.

Looking within Term 2 there are several exciting performances coming up.

Recitals – Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May

Both these recitals will be featuring students from across the Junior and Senior Schools. More information will be coming out shortly.

Jazz Night – Wednesday 22 May

This is a fantastic evening of jazz, with some of our Senior students being accompanied by the Rory Clarke Trio. There will also be performances from Jazz Ensemble, Soul Band, Viva Voci, Vox, and Senior Saxophone Ensemble.

Years 7/8 Concert – Tuesday 28 May

This Concert is specifically for students in Years 7 and 8. Students involved in African Drumming and Taiko Drumming will be performing.

Performances will also be provided by Years 7/8 Strings, Sherrin Singers, Years 6, 7, and 8 Concert Band and some soloists.

I look forward to seeing as many lovers of music at these events as we can throughout the course of Term 2.
