Learning about Identity
This term the focus in Health lessons has been on exploring Identities and Changes.
Part of developing our identity comes from having an understanding of ourselves and the people around us. Identity can be considered as both;
- Individual characteristics at birth, such as gender, physical features, attributes, and abilities; and
- Personal identity that is shaped by social and cultural context, initially with the family and community and later with peers and other adults.
Our Prep students identified things they were good at, finding similarities and differences amongst themselves. We continued exploring groups they belong to within, and outside the local community, often part of groups associated with their interests.
The girls are trying to understand that ‘culture’ is the way that people live. Where you come from and the things that are important or special to you and your family. The students found that their families shared some similarities through special occasions they celebrated as well as differences due to such things as cultural backgrounds and beliefs. They have enjoyed drawing and writing about their findings.
Year One students identified qualities that make them unique. They explored things they do well and how by using these strengths they can achieve success. They named important people in their lives who help them and who they socialise with. We explored how they have changed since they were babies now that they are six. There are so many things they can now do by themselves or are still learning to do. They identified many things they have learned to do and realise there are many they can’t do yet but are working on it.
Meanwhile the students in Year 2 explored what strengths they possess and how these qualities help them achieve success. They concluded that through teamwork many things could be achieved, and that each has strengths which can be used to contribute towards helping others complete tasks together successfully.
Year 3 students discussed and identified factors that influence their personal identity as well as how they can influence other people’s personal identity. They were then able to recognise qualities that enable sportspeople to achieve success, in particular, positive ways to respond to failures or new challenges. The students were in awe of the achievements of both Bethany Hamilton and Steven Bradbury after hearing of their determination and positive attitude in achieving success in the face of adversity. They discovered the power of self-talk and how important this is in assisting them when tackling challenges.
Our Year 4 students further investigated the importance of perseverance and persistence in trying, particularly in the face of failure and adversity. They were able to link the feelings and emotions they may experience in these challenging situations. They developed their awareness that failure is just a point on the journey towards success. Students recognised the importance of having a good support crew for being there for them in times of need.
It is important to a child’s development and wellbeing to understand that there is always someone out there who they can talk to and go to for assistance, whether it be at home or school. Understanding one’s identity helps them understand how they not only belong but also contribute to groups both inside and outside of School.
