Boarding and Homestay
A home away from home
There are three different living options at St Catherine's School for non-residential students. Students from rural areas or from overseas can choose to stay in our Boarding House ‘Illawarra' which is situated on campus, or they can stay with a local family in a School-approved Homestay arrangement or they can live with a friend or relative.
Our Boarding House
St Catherine's has an enviable international reputation as one of the finest boarding schools in Australia since 1896. Illawarra, a fully renovated, National Trust-listed Victorian mansion, is a place to unwind at the end of the School day, share experiences, obtain academic support from tutors and participate in dances, outings and cultural events. Under the care and supervision of experienced staff, our boarders experience an extended family and develop lifelong friends. Our Boarders Handbook provides detailed information and answers all frequently asked questions.

Homestay
Homestay is where students stay with a local family who is registered to provide accommodation for non-residential students. These families and their homes have been carefully assessed by St Catherine's to ensure they will provide an appropriate and safe environment. Only Years 11 and 12 students stay in Homestay accommodation.
Staff members closely monitor the Homestay arrangement to ensure that the student and family are both happy. Students have wonderful experiences being welcomed into the lives of local families. More information on Homestay is available in our comprehensive International Student booklet.
Family or Friends
International students can opt to live with a family member or friend over the age of 25, who is residing in Melbourne. To be approved by the School, the arrangement must meet the expectations of an official Homestay environment.
