Year 8 Medieval Day

On Tuesday 7 August, our Year 8 students took part in a Medieval history experience. The students are currently studying Medieval Europe, and focussing on the feudal system, feudal society, life in the manor, religion, crime and punishment and defence.

The students were exposed to three different experiences: clothing and costumes for women, games, entertainment and weapons and armour.

India Marner Writes About Medieval Day

On Tuesday 7 August, all of the Year 8 students were asked to dress up as a person from medieval times. There were many costumes, ranging from bakers to Royals, although I think the most popular costume was that of a Nun. As soon as we left form in the morning and arrived at 15 Heyington Place, where our activities were taking place, it felt like we had gone back to Medieval times. During the morning, we played many games and learnt about the way people dressed. We had a class about Knight’s clothing, how it has evolved over time and what the weapons were used in battle.

Next, my class learnt about Medieval clothing style. We started at the bottom of the social hierarchy in the feudal system, with the farmers, and worked our way up the social ladder learning about how each different person dressed.

The last, and judging by the laughs, favourite thing we did was play Medieval games. We played a game which people used to find husbands, hmm? We also played a game that people used to practise their axe throwing.

Overall, I think Medieval Day was a great experience that we all enjoyed. I believe that dressing up and immersing ourselves in Medieval life, extended our knowledge and reinforced what we had learnt in class, it was a great way to learn, which I really enjoyed!
