The Banksia Chart

This term, given the children’s emerging maturity, we want to increase their understanding of responsibility. In Term 3, the children were introduced to the Banksia Job Board. Through this Job Board, the class have begun to learn what it means to accept responsibility and be part of the ‘Banksia Team’. They have been able to choose a job and complete the task throughout the day.

Alice Mackenzie and Arabella Lutz were asked to work together to problem solve the creation of a chart that would connect the class to the Job Board and introduce the need to record important information. Arabella and Alice counted the message boxes, lockers and journals in the classroom to determine how many lines they would need for the chart. They proudly told me there are 19 of each. The girls then started work on the chart. I helped the girls to position the ruler and they drew the lines. Small photographs were cut out to represent each child on the chart. Reduced drawings of the jobs were pasted along the bottom of the chart.

This chart will be used for the remainder of the year. Each child will have a turn to complete it, with the support of a teacher, to reinforce the concept of knowing which box to mark. The next stage will involve the children working in pairs to problem solve the completion of this chart. The final stage will involve each child completing the chart independently.
