Sophie Holt
Sophie Holt (’82) has shaped the wardrobes of Australian women for over three decades with her modern point of view and considered approach to design.
Since 2017, Sophie has been the creative director at Oroton, Australia’s oldest luxury fashion house founded in 1938. She set about reinvigorating the brand with fresh spirit, paying tribute to the house’s craft, whilst moving it forward, evolving its leathergoods and introducing clothing in 2019. Oroton moved from a loss-making brand to one with profits.
Sophie began her career in design at Sportsgirl, where she created the label Elle B in 1990 for Sportsgirl stores.
In 1997, Sophie was named Head of Design at Witchery, turning the brand around and making it relevant to a modern customer. During her time at the brand, she created and launched a new brand, Seed, with childrenswear, in 2000.
Her experience across multiple design categories, led to her appointment as Creative Director at Country Road in 2003 where she worked for 13 years. After making Country Road Australia’s most loved modern lifestyle brand, Sophie launched Trenery in 2009.
Today, Sophie continues to influence women’s style with her contemporary vision and deliberate design philosophy. She shares two observations from her accomplished career: “The importance of cohesive handwriting throughout a brand, to have this consistency across all customer touchpoints and a real understanding of the vision and the message”, and “being brave, and giving the customer something new and surprising, but at the same time being very wearable and understandable”. In addition to her role as Creative Director at Oroton, Sophie is a member of the Board of Directors of Oroton Group.
Outside of her creative career, Sophie enjoys spending time with family, travelling, art, and collecting vintage furniture. Sophie has three children.
