PhD, Adjunct Professor, AICD

Dr Rebecca Coates (’82) has been an accomplished museum director, curator, public speaker, writer and lecturer for more than three decades.

A leading advocate for arts and culture, Indigenous engagement and diversity and inclusion, Rebecca has a PhD in art history, is an Adjunct Professor at Monash University, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Rebecca has been the Director of the Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA), one of Australia’s leading contemporary art university museums, since 2023. She repositioned MUMA to play a core role as part of a wider university teaching and learning context, ensuring MUMA is recognised and valued for its activities across the wider Monash community and beyond. Around 40 percent of the Monash Collection is presented across Monash’s five Victorian university campuses creating a unique teaching and learning experience. With over 2800 artworks by 860 artists, the Collection focusses on contemporary artwork by leading Australian artists and is valued at more than $48 million.

Of the program, Rebecca said, “Universities are, at their core, about ideas, new knowledge and learning. Through MUMA’s program we extend this pursuit into the cultural sphere, offering exhibitions that foster critical reflection, dialogue and connection across diverse communities.”

Prior to MUMA, Rebecca was the Artistic Director and CEO of the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) for six years. Rebecca was responsible for redeveloping and opening the new Museum and its subsequent two-year artistic program. Opened in 2021, the new space – a $50M building designed by Denton Corker Marshall – radically rethinks the role of arts and culture and Indigenous reconciliation in a regional Australian context. The Art Museum’s exhibitions are now widely recognised across Australia and internationally.

Over her long career, Rebecca has had extensive Board experience as both a Chair and non-Executive Director in leading arts and cultural organisations and government boards. She has been regularly invited to sit on assessment and selection panels for grants and awards and key industry positions. Mentorship and an enabler ethos is highly important to Rebecca. As well as selected speaking and writing engagements, industry and arts and cultural sector events, Rebecca has published two books and written many book chapters, essays, journal articles and reviews.

When not working, Rebecca enjoys swimming with Jennie Bucknell’s “Warriors” squad, yoga, visiting galleries, museums and concerts and her two book groups. Her love of gardening and garden design has led to planting oak trees with her husband for future generations. Rebecca has two daughters.
