Women in Parliament Q&A

Year 11 Australian and Global Politics students had the opportunity to speak with the new Member of the House of Representatives for the seat of Higgins, Dr Michelle Ananda-Rajah last week.

The students were excited to speak with the new local member and invited Dr Ananda-Rajah to our School after her election to Parliament. We were priviliged to host the conversation with Dr Ananda-Rajah, which was attended by many interested Years 10 and 11 students.

Dr Ananda-Rajah responded to a range of questions from the Politics students, as well as from the audience, with positive accounts of the changing space for women in politics and in the new Federal Parliament, but also the importance of the growing diversity of representation in politics and government.

Dr Ananda-Rajah encouraged young women to get involved in politics to pursue things they want to change and be part of those changes. She also spoke of her background in academia, the medical sciences and health care and the challenges that remain for women in those fields, but also of the positive changes that are happening.

Inspired by the discussion, the students invited Dr Ananda-Rajah to return in 2023 to talk to the wider student body about being in Parliament along with some of the other women elected to the Federal Parliament this year.
