VCE Art Show 2022

The Floorboards Creak with Love

Author Julia Cameron wrote, “In order to create, we draw from our inner well. This inner well, an artistic reservoir, is ideally like a well-stocked fishpond… If we don’t give some attention to upkeep, our well is apt to become depleted, stagnant, or blocked…”

The VCE Visual Arts study designs encourage inquiry, performative and project-based learning. The immense variety of highly resolved ideas and the refinement and resolution of Media products, Visual Communication Design and Studio Arts highlight that our wonderful VCE cohort’s “fishpond has been well stocked.”

The students put their heart and souls into creating artworks that are individual, engaging, and strong, both artistically and technically. We as teachers are very proud of the VCE Visual Arts cohort for their ongoing commitment to pursue excellence over 2022.

Opened by internationally renowned artist and St Catherine’s Old Girl, Miss Jessica (Jessie) Breakwell (’93), Jessie encouraged students to use social media to start an online presence to get their work noticed. She highlighted that in this highly visible age, students could make a living from art. Jessie shared that being active on social media has helped her to be a busy international artist with a full-time practice.

Our Art and Design Captains, Scarlett and Claudia provide their insights below.

Scarlett Davis, 2022 Art and Design Captain:

“While we could appreciate the amount of time and effort that goes into an Art subject – thanks to the constant reminder from Mum – we really underestimated the personal connection we have formed with our artworks as well as our close relationships to our classmates and teachers. My artworks mean far more to me than any ATAR or Study Score I will receive on. Importantly, I have been able to use my folio work to pursue a tertiary education.

We have been so fortunate to access Wiltondale, the incredible facilities and teachers here at St Catherine’s. With all the blood, sweat and tears of Year 12, Wiltondale was our haven. The freedom of exploring our own concepts, working with whatever medium we desired, listening to 70s bangers on repeat and being able to productively do something we are immensely passionate about is so very important to each and every one of us.”

Claudia Bryant, 2022 Art and Design Captain:

“I only joined the St Catherine’s School Family in 2018. The minute I was guided around Wiltondale I knew St Cath’s was the school for me. The floorboards creak with love and such a deep passion for art. I came to St Cath’s for their Art Program, and I know for a fact that you couldn’t persuade Scarlett to leave her precious studio behind. As a cohort, we endured countless sleepless nights, wrecked our uniforms with oil paint, pricked our fingers sewing up a storm and created multiple digital copies just to make the tiniest refinements as we sat over our VCD communications for hours. It’s bittersweet that our time at School is coming to an end, but I don’t think either of us have ever been prouder of our classmates for coming this far and producing such a high quality and diverse range of works.

We would also like to acknowledge Jo-Jo Patterson, Charlotte Henderson and Mr Grunden for their musical performances which set the mood for the VCE Art Show opening evening.”
