State Sailing Champion – Lilly Fogarty

Congratulations to Year 10 student, Lilly Fogarty who achieved overall first place at the Victorian 420 State Sailing Championships in March, competing against adults, males and competitive sailors from Victoria and interstate.

Lilly provides a summary of the Championships below:

“I competed in the Victorian 420 State Championships. The Regatta was over three days on the Labour Day long weekend. The Race Committee aimed to get in 12 races for the Regatta. There was a total of 11 boats competing, some coming interstate from South Australia.

One the first day, Saturday, there were four races held. The wind was very light that day, around 0-5 knots, and was very shifty. We ended up placing first, first, fourth and first. We came out of the first day in first place overall, meaning the next day we got to wear yellow bibs. On the second day, there were five races held. That day, the wind was quite a bit windier with around 10-18 knots of wind. That day, we got a first, first, first, third and second.

On the final day, the wind was around 5-10 knots. We came away with three first placings. Overall, we placed first against adults, males, and some very competitive sailors from not only Victoria, but some interstate as well. We also won first female crew.

In terms of my sailing, I train every weekend at Mornington, Flinders, and Davey’s Bay Yacht Club with my skipper Liv Cameron (Toorak College).

We have also been selected to compete at the 420 World Championships being held in mid-July this year. Originally planned to be held in Turkey, they have to find a new location following the Turkey earthquakes.”

Congratulations to Lilly.
