Learning About Ourselves and Each Other

During this term, each Year level covers a range of different topics in Health.

The Prep students are looking at who they are and how they can show respect. They also learn about personal and social skills for different situations. The students enjoy role playing and responding to stories.

In both Prep and Year 1, the students have been discussing how to make a new friend. We identified that we first need to establish eye contact, smile, and introduce ourselves to each other. The students explored other qualities and behaviours that would assist in both making, and being, a good friend.

In Years 1 and 2, students are identifying and exploring their personal qualities and those of others. This is then linked to how these qualities help to develop their own identities.

Students in Year 2 interviewed one of their peers to find similarities and differences. Exploring how their backgrounds, and community groups they belong to, influence who they are. They are also looking at how good manners, rules, and other skills help them maintain respect within their communities.

The Year 3 students explore their interactions with others and look at ways to strengthen relationships. They are predicting and reflecting on how others might feel in challenging situations, and discussing what they can do to support them through these. This also includes using cooperative skills of encouragement and demonstrating respect and empathy.

Meanwhile, students in Year 4 are exploring diversity within our community. They are looking at how celebrations, recipes, games, and stories can reflect our diverse cultural heritage, and how valuing these influence our wellbeing. They will also be looking at how to respond when they see unfair or disrespectful behaviour towards others.
