Every Individual Makes a Difference

“Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference.”

Our Community Garden

The children in the ELC have been working on a collaborative project to develop the ELC vegetable garden over recent months. After initially preparing the soil and garden beds, researching plants, consulting Landscape Designer Jack Merlo, and completing the planting process, the children have spent the past few months tending to the vegetable garden.

With lots of love, rain, sunshine, weeding and care, the children are now starting to see produce that is ready for picking, tasting, and sharing. It has been wonderful to see the children from all classes working together and taking responsibility for the vegetable garden.

Gardening experiences provide wonderful opportunities for the children to learn about plants, growth, life cycles, sustainability, and healthy eating.

‘No Waste November’

Throughout the month of November, we will be supporting the Dr Jane Goodall Foundation environmental initiative known as ‘No Waste November.’  After discussion with the children and observation at the ELC we have identified that we have a large volume of plastic yoghurt container lids from the children’s lunch boxes which cannot be recycled. We have discussed this environmental issue with the children and have committed to avoiding using this type of packaging as part of our ‘No Waste November’ project.

Children and families are asked to avoid using plastic yoghurt containers and instead use a recyclable container for yoghurt to help support the environment. It is important that we begin to practise new habits in relation to recycling and re-using materials with the children as these become lifelong habits.

If you have plastic yoghurt container tops at home, these can be taken to any Coles or Woolworths stores where an organisation known as ‘RedCycle’ has collection points. ‘RedCycle’ re-use plastics that are unable to be recycled to create new plastic products.
