News from the STEM Lab

Ahoy Scientists!

It has been a busy few weeks for STEM in Barbreck!

Across the cohorts we have been exploring biology. Our stick insects have returned, with a newly hatched one growing quickly! The Preps and Year 1s have planted sunflowers in the garden and are eagerly looking forward to the moment their flowers outgrow them.

In Prep, they have also been looking at the needs of living things and comparing our needs to those of animals and plants. The Year 1s have been learning about different features of animals and how animals use them to survive.

In Year 2, we planted snow peas and are looking to relocate them outside soon. The Year 3s have been learning about vertebrates and invertebrates, classifying animals by phylum. This has been their culmination of work on living and non-living things.

The Year 4s have begun the slow experiment of growing avocado seeds while also researching the life cycles of some unique animals.

In Year 5, students have been looking closely at adaptations of animals. They have also planted some heirloom carrots and they cannot wait to see the rainbow of colours when they’re ready to harvest.

Finally, the Year 6s have been researching features and adaptations to create our own animals to suit an environment. All the while, they continue to care for the succulents they propagated earlier in the term.

It has been a wonderful start to STEM in Term 1!
