Barbreck Chess Club is open to all students from Years 1 to 6, from beginners through to advanced players.

Students can play weekly, learning new chess strategies and skills. A Representative Chess Team is chosen to participate in interschool chess competitions and a Barbreck Chess Tournament is held each year providing the students the opportunity to experience competition chess.

Students are always encouraged to come and try Chess, but we do ask students to commit to the Chess Club on an ongoing basis if they wish to continue. If your daughter wants to attend the ‘Chess Intensive’ coaching classes, she can enrol with the external company, Chess Ideas, who deliver their sessions Monday mornings from 7.45am in the STEM Lab at Barbreck. Details about the ‘Chess Intensives’ Program are found on the parent portal in Co-curriculum Programs.

The St Catherine’s Chess Team is coached by experienced expert coach, Mr Ross Neumann. Ross assists students to hone their chess-playing skills and knowledge in a fun atmosphere.

Learning and playing chess helps children develop their thinking and problem-solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment.
