GRADUATING YEAR  2015
JOB TITLE Trainee Development Manager
PLACE OF WORK Mirvac
PLACE OF WORK WEBSITE  www.mirvac.com/
LINKEDIN  www.linkedin.com/in/sophie-joubert

After finishing Year 12, I spent a year abroad in England working as a Resident Teachers Assistant (or otherwise know as a “Gap” student) at St Catherine’s School in Bramley, UK. This was a decision I made because of the extensive travel opportunities it provided and a feeling that I was not yet ready to begin my tertiary studies. Upon returning, I completed a Bachelor of Design at Melbourne University with a major in Property and minor in Design Histories. During this time, I worked part-time for a small residential builder and graduated at the end of 2019. I then started as a Residential Development Graduate at Mirvac and now work permanently within the Development Management team on a sustainable townhouse project called “The Fabric” located in Altona North. Despite having had to work from home for well over a year now… this job has definitely kept things interesting and offers the opportunity to get involved with a wide variety of topics from finance and construction all the way to sales and marketing. Look forward to sharing!

After completing Year 12, I moved up to the Gold Coast to study a Bachelor of International Hotel and Tourism Management at Bond University. Whilst at Bond, I gained a lot of industry experience interning in Human Resources and working in Food and Beverage at the Sheraton, and then interning in Revenue Management and working in Sales, Events and Marketing at the Marriott. Once I had finished my degree in 2018, I was accepted into the Graduate Leadership Program at The Star Entertainment Group which was an 18-month program that gave me the opportunity to rotate into various departments including Food and Beverage, Hotel, Gaming, Human Resources, Marketing, Procurement and Sales. The final six months of the program allowed me to choose my area of specialisation which led me to marketing. After finishing my specialisation last year, I secured a permanent role as the Leisure & Entertainment Marketing Coordinator at The Star Gold Coast where I help to deliver major campaigns, promotions and special events for our restaurants, bars, hotels and entertainment venues. I have also just recently started my own dress hire business as a bit of a side hustle which has been such a fantastic and interesting experience.

JOB TITLE  Managing Director
PLACE OF WORK  Bromleigh Capital

After completing Year 12, I studied a Bachelor of Commerce at The University of Melbourne, with an Accounting major and Finance minor. I studied full-time for a year, then studied part-time while working four to five days a week at PricewaterhouseCoopers as a trainee in their International Tax and Transaction Services team. After working at PwC for several years, I wanted to transition into something more hands-on, and became Head of Operations at an eCommerce FMCG company. I worked at several scaling companies in the eCommerce industry, largely in strategy roles, as they expanded their operations globally. After working with young businesses for several years, I identified the need for more affordable and sustainable debt funding. I then founded my own company, Bromleigh Capital, Australia’s first ethical small business debt financier. After growing my company for several years, I began to feel the challenges of establishing confidence and credibility as a young female founder in a male-dominated industry. I decided in order to further myself and my company, I would embark on additional study. I have just graduated from a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University at Oxford and am currently based in London. Outside of work, I continue to play violin as I did at School, as well as singing and playing bass guitar in a band with friends. I do a lot of Latin ballroom dancing and amateur Broadway shows in my spare time, and love cooking and traveling with friends.

JOB TITLE  Consultant
PLACE OF WORK  OC&C Strategy Consultants

After graduating in 2013, I moved to the UK to study Natural Sciences at Cambridge University. I ended up specialising in what some might call an Arts subject – History and Philosophy of Science – and graduated in 2018 with a BA and MSci. As much as I loved my time at uni, I confirmed that academia was not my next step, as I wanted to experience the corporate world. Management/Strategy Consulting was pitched to me as being, employed to be a “problem solver” and I undertook a summer internship at my current firm OC&C, converting it into a job offer at the end. I’ve been living and working full-time in London since January 2019, and have worked for a wide range of clients including Ted Baker, Unilever, Primark, even a forensic accounting firm, on many different types of projects including due diligence work for Private Equity firms and strategic work. Whilst my job is definitely not a 9 to 5, I have a great time with the people I work with, and I am constantly learning! Outside of work, I love running, cooking and eating, and am also exploring how I might move into more positive impact-focused work, as I think about my next career steps.

NAME Zara Mellios
GRADUATING YEAR  2013
JOB TITLE  Florist
PLACE OF WORK  Studio Based Workplace
PLACE OF WORK WEBSITE  www.saltflower.com.au
Upon completing year 12 I was accepted into a Bachelor of Communication design at RMIT. It was a brilliant course but I was quick to realise I didn’t enjoy how tech heavy it was. I deferred after a semester and applied for a bachelor of nursing at ACU. In the meantime I got a job working at a florist full time as a shop assistant. While I enjoyed nursing, placement allowed me to realise it was not for me. After I completed a year, I deferred and completed my cert II and III at Melbourne Polytechnic Tafe to become a qualified florist. After roughly 8 years in the industry working as a retail florist and freelance weddings/events florist I have decided to start my own business with my best friend and haven’t looked back! Although it took some time to find a career I was passionate about, each avenue gave me valuable experience professionally and personally which to me is irreplaceable. I love being on my feet, meeting new people and working with my hands, 9-5 never made sense to me and that’s why I love this wildly inspiring industry.

If you’d asked me where I saw myself in five years when I was in Year 12, I would not have guessed here. I left School quite job-focused and studied a Bachelor of Commerce at The University of Melbourne (Marketing & Finance majors), with breadth tracks in Literature and Philosophy, and was lucky to live on campus at Trinity College. I then took a year off to traverse Central and South America and while I learned a lot of Spanish, I didn’t get clarity on what to do next. I landed a job at a global agency Wunderman (now Wunderman Thompson) working across digital strategy, production, copywriting, social media, and project management. I found that my creativity was calling, and I now work at the NGV developing content, working on digital strategies for exhibitions, working on social, email and our website. I’ve always had an interest in books, films and cultures, so I am lucky to work in a job that intersects with those passions. I now have a free Art History degree, am creative every day, and am still investing time in learning Spanish on Duolingo.

After completing Year 12 I didn’t have a great deal of direction. I undertook a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Deakin due to being proficient at Maths. Upon completion of the first two years of my studies I decided I still had a deep desire to be in the healthcare sector. This led me down a path to discover how the two could work together. Resources at St Catherine’s helped me find a double degree in Nursing Science/Business that I could transfer into whilst retaining my credits. My search continued and it was one year out of university that I discovered the world of the MedTech industry. I had found a way to impact people and their wellbeing, whilst also climbing the corporate ladder and influencing large scale decisions. Best of all, no glass ceiling! Since then my career has been a whirlwind full of opportunities I was unaware existed. Second to my main job, I also offer counselling to individuals looking to use their skills to branch out into new industries. Outside of work I keep up with all of my friends from St Catherine’s socially as well as enjoy fitness, designing, travel and cooking.

I found myself in Year 10 deciding I wanted to work in the medical world. With a keen interest in helping people, science and avoiding a desk job I decided to lean into a specific goal of becoming a Physiotherapist. I had two years to produce the ATAR that would make this possible so I worked by butt off to land in my dream course of a Bachelor of Applied Science and Masters of Physiotherapy at La Trobe University. Since my acceptance in 2014, I have experienced a very challenging degree, years of clinical placements and competitive job application processes. I made it out in one piece with the illustrious piece of paper I had been dreaming of since I was 16. I have since worked in Melbourne in private practice and with amateur AFL teams. I then found my niche in spinal physiotherapy at a private practice in Sydney. My latest venture has been to explore what else lies ahead for me in my career. I have been exploring the vast options that lie in Physiotherapy and Medicine, having recently sat the GAMSAT I hope to open some more exciting study and career doors!

JOB TITLE  Associate
PLACE OF WORK  Allens
PLACE OF WORK WEBSITE www.allens.com.au/
LINKEDIN www.linkedin.com/in/charlotte-brock-b91177102/

During School, my favourite subjects were English and International Studies, and I had a keen interest in Debating and Politics. I chose to study a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne and attend Ormond College (which I would highly recommend), with the view of either studying Journalism or Law afterwards. After completing my BA and a few internships, I chose to study Law which ultimately led me to studying a Master’s degree in London and obtaining a job offer at Allens, which is the law firm I still work at today, three years later. Previously, I have worked in Mergers & Acquisitions and now in Banking & Finance. Outside of work, I love visiting my family and golden retriever in regional Victoria, cooking, hanging out with my girlfriends and spending time at the beach.

NAME Amanda Teale

JOB TITLE  Senior Legal Policy Officer
PLACE OF WORK  Department of Justice and Community Safety Victoria
PLACE OF WORK WEBSITE www.justice.vic.gov.au/
LINKEDIN www.linkedin.com/in/ajteale/

After graduating from St Catherine’s I headed off to Canberra to study a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of Arts (majoring in International Relations and Political Science) at the Australian National University.

Since then I have worked in both the public and private sectors. In 2016 and 2017 I worked for the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department, firstly for the Defence Abuse Response Taskforce in Canberra and then for the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory (also known as the Don Dale Royal Commission) in Darwin. I then worked at a boutique commercial law firm in Sydney for two years before returning to Melbourne and to the public service, where I have since worked in legal policy for the Department of Justice and Community Safety, focusing on youth justice.

I am really excited to share my experiences working in legal policy because in my experience, there was very little information for students about this career path compared to other career paths in the legal sector.

PLACE OF WORK WEBSITE
https://www.flyingbark.com.au/
LINKEDIN
https://www.linkedin.com/in/coco-garner-davis/

I finished year 12 with an extreme passion for film and TV and one dream – I needed to work in the industry. I jumped straight into a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Screenwriting) at the Victorian College of the Arts and moved to Trinity College to live and spend three fab years working hard on scripts and mucking around. After graduating in 2017, I didn’t quite feel done with studying (exciting, I know) and after meeting people across all areas of entertainment I found a divide between the creatives and the essential business side of film. It led to a desire to learn how creatives could be better supported, so I began a Juris Doctor at the University of Melbourne where I founded the Film, Arts, Media, and Entertainment Law Students’ Association to grow awareness of these alternative fields of law and their importance. I continued to work on scripts and make short films in my own time, and since finishing my law degree have worked in the legal team at Sydney-based Flying Bark Productions, a brilliant CGI & animation company, whilst also being mentored by Judi Levine (’72) and assisting in development at her independent film company. I’m currently in the process of optioning, writing, and producing my first TV show with the brilliant support and mentorship of Judi.

Outside of work, I love running, skiing and (of course) digging into a good ol’ bucket of popcorn & a choc top at the cinemas.

I then went on to study Medicine at the University of Melbourne. I did most of my placement at the Austin Hospital and went on to intern there. Then in 2020 I spent a majority of my time on the COVID ward which was something I could have never prepared myself for. At the end of 2020 I was finally about to start following my Sports Medicine dreams and commenced work at the North Melbourne Football Club across their AFLW, VFL, and VFLW teams. Hi students – I remember all too well how difficult it can be to be a young person. When I was young I needed help and for this reason I understand just how valuable a warm, understanding psychologist can be to a young person experiencing the natural vulnerability of growing up. Having ‘grown up’ now, I spend my days helping young people with their mental health as a psychologist.
I’ve worked so far in high school settings, primary school settings, and in forensic psychology (Corrections Victoria). I work now in private practice primarily with children, adolescents, families and young adults.
If you’re interested in mental health and want to know about what it’s like to work in the field, I’d be honoured to share my experiences so far. Look forward to meeting you soon.

At school I was torn between my interests in science and commerce. I chose to study a Bachelor of Science at The University of Melbourne, this allowed me to complete breadth subjects in the commerce faculty – continuing to explore my various interest and potential career pathways. I discovered that a life in the business world was not where my passion was and it was in science after all, but I was still unsure as to where a career in science would take me. After exploring a range of different fields during my studies I ended up majoring in Human Physiology due to my endless fascination with studying the human body. I started off my career working in a human genetic testing lab. Since then I have continued to explore different career options science has to offer, such as teaching in the first year biology labs at Melbourne uni, working as a sleep scientist to now running a Respiratory and Clinical testing lab in Queensland, in a beautiful coastal town located at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef (best place to escape Melbourne lockdown!). I am currently enrolled in a Master of Medical ultrasound through Monash and studying remotely allowing me to work and study on the pristine beaches that harbor stunning reefs this part of QLD has to offer. I love travelling, going to the beach, shopping and socialising. I can’t wait to see where my career takes me next!

After one semester at Uni, I took six months off to volunteer at early childcare and community projects in Swaziland and Cape Town, South Africa which was pivotal in my development and learning how to practice gratitude. I then completed my degree and took a gap year to ride horses (passion), work and travel before landing an internship in developing health food products at Vitality. I now work at Coles developing Pantry & Health Food products and love working with others, being creative and learning new things. Outside of work, I’m training for a triathlon, love my two cavalier pups and am excited for hanging out with friends and family again post lockdowns!
