ELC Concerts, examinations and the byways

Monday 21 November 2011

I have been hearing about the absolute delight that our ELC students have been giving to each other, parents, friends and teachers as they performed in their various concerts. The colour, excitement, singing and dancing, and the theme woven around nature, has been appreciated for all fortunate enough to be there. It is now Friday, and I know the inside of my office intimately and enjoy being in there, but oh for the freedom to have been at those concerts.

I would like to convey my thanks to all our staff for the way in which our secondary examination period has gone and for their involvement in the Year 8 Experience and Beyond Boundaries camping program that is just beginning. Music, Art and Drama staff are also preparing for the girls’ to commence House Arts.

One of the experiences I have valued most in school education is being both an observer and a participant in the growth and development of so many different individuals. Sometimes as an adult, we are eager for young people to reach their ‘peak’ or whatever might be the right phrase, in a quick, straight line. At other times, we are called upon to be great supporters of our children and young people, while they learn about life through the byways, rather than the straight highway. Whatever the route, it is their route, their way. One of our prime purposes is to walk behind and beside, as well as occasionally nudge in a particular direction.
